Room Of Support Details

Following a suggestion from a volunteer in early 2016 who sent a link to a Room started at a school in North Carolina, the Network approached the Loch Raven High School staff about finding a space in the school that could be used for storing and providing food, clothing, and toiletries for students in need.

The room had to be easily accessible with a quick and discrete entrance and exit possible – it is very hard for high school students, teenagers and self-conscious, to ask for help.  The staff found a great location and the Room was born.  Shelving was donated by St. Thomas’s church and clothing racks were provided by the Network.  An anonymous gift of $500 provided the first major effort to stock the Room with food.

Organized in the spring of 2016, the Room of Support has become a place where students in need, accompanied by school staff, can find non-perishable food, clothing, personal care items, bedding, school supplies, and other items they have requested such as alarm clocks (especially important for homeless students).  Many of these essential items (shampoo, toothpaste, laundry soap) cannot be purchased by students or families with government assistance benefits; student and families can then use their limited resources to buy food if they can find what they need in the Room.

You can help us keep the Room stocked!
